Obituary of James Maurice Davis

James Maurice Davis was born on December 11, 1971, in Sacramento, California; the youngest child of Johnny E. Davis Sr. and Eloise Holloway Davis. Surrounded by family, he transitioned and entered into God’s Kingdom on March 27, 2022. Affectionately known as, "Marty" by his family and, “Forty” by his friends; he was a husband, son, brother, uncle, cousin, Pop-Pop and a loyal friend. James was an easy-going guy, but if necessary he wouldn’t mind letting you know how he felt. Upon receiving his high school diploma, he worked various jobs as a laborer. In his youth, he played basketball and little league baseball was a yearly family affair. He was coached by his grandfather and played several positions including pitcher. He enthusiastically enjoyed watching sports; however, he was quite the athlete himself! In 1994, his mobility was taken in an instant. He continued to live his life to the fullest; same personality, same character, same zest for life! He was a car enthusiast. Prior to his injury, he was passionate about working on cars. He took great pride in attending car shows and could tell you anything about automobiles, especially the classics. His prize possession was a ’77 Monte Carlo. He would proudly boast that everything in it was original, including the air conditioner, which still worked. If he could, he would have restored it himself. James had an undeniable sweet tooth. He was always well stocked with his favorite candy, Jolly Ranchers. As a youth, he enjoyed fishing and he would delight in beating opponents while playing pool in his family’s garage. He loved listening to music, playing video games, watching movies and binge watching television shows. He was very much a strategist. He enjoyed the game of chess. Burton Rowe Sr. told James that, if he won against him, he could marry Emonnie (Mr. Rowe’s daughter). Few are fortunate to ever find true love. “Maurice,” as she called him and Emonnie met when they were mere teenagers. On March 17, 1996, they united as one. Together, they reared their niece, Brandy Martin, and nephew, Darryl Barksdale. As a pre-teen, James accepted Christ and was baptized at St. John Missionary Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his mother, Eloise Holloway Davis; mother-in-law, Tammara Boyd; and niece, Alexandria Sweet-Davis. Those left to cherish precious memories and carry on his legacy include his wife, Emonnie Rowe-Davis; father, Johnny E. Davis, Sr.; siblings – Gwendolyn Davis, and Johnny E. Davis, Jr. (Nel); brother-in-laws – Nijis Rowe, and Burton Rowe; sister-in-law, Hannah Jackson (Kareem); nephew, Darryl Barksdale; nieces, Brandy Martin, Johnashay Davis, and Navarria Davis; childhood friend, Alex “Tiny” Brown; and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins and beloved friends.
