Obituary of Darlene Sue Young

DARLENE SUE YOUNG APRIL 10, 1950 – SEPTEMBER 22, 2020 BELOVED MOTHER, SISTER, SINGER AND GRANDMOTHER Darlene was born in Bradford, Pennsylvania on April 10, 1950. Her father was Leroy Gerber and mother was Patricia Gerber. Darlene was the oldest sibling. She has two brothers and a sister. Their names are Gary Gerber, Roy Gerber and Bonnie Wassmer(Gerber). In 1967, Darlene’s family moved out to California because of Leroy taking a promotion opportunity with IBM. Darlene would spend the rest of her life in California. She graduated High School in 1969. She later went on to receive a Bachelor’s Degree in English at the California University of San Jose with the dreams of becoming an English teacher. While going to college, she entered the Real Estate field in the early 1970’s. She had such a passion for Real Estate, she never left the field and established her own company in 1996 which survives to this day and is owned and run by her son. Darlene was married in 1972 to Gary Young; they were married until 1982. Despite having love throughout her life, she never remarried. After becoming divorced, Darlene decided to explore her talent for singing. Singing would become a very strong passion for Darlene. She would go on to perform with many different groups and artists throughout the rest of her life. Her last performance was in November 2019. Everywhere and everyone that had the privilege of hearing her sing loved her voice and the passion she expressed in her singing. Many people that she became friends with were directly related to those who listened and enjoyed her sing. When she sang, it brought so much light and beauty into all of our lives. In 1978, Darlene and Gary Young had one son, Michael. While Darlene’s life was focused on Real Estate and singing, her greatest love was for her son. Anyone who truly knew Darlene knew that there was nothing she would not have done for her son. She expressed many times that her greatest joy and accomplishment in life was being a mother. Throughout Darlene’s life, she had very special relationships and she had a beautiful, kind, and loving personality. She was very outgoing, charismatic and enjoyed life to its fullest. Unfortunately, cancer took her from us far too early. She was diagnosed with stage 3 kidney cancer in December 2019 and with her son, family and friends, she fought as best she could. But this cancer was just too strong and took her from us on September 22, 2020. Her final resting place is at Gate of Heaven Catholic Cemetery in Los Altos, California. Darlene had a beautiful life with many friends and family who love her very much. She will forever live in our hearts. She is survived by her son, Michael Young; her siblings Gary Gerber, Roy Gerber, Bonnie Wassmer(Gerber); her granddaughter, Sophia Young; her daughter-in law, Maria Young; her sister –in law, Barbara Gerber, Sister-in law; Brother-in law ,Matt Wassmer; sister-in law, Julia Rodriguez; her nieces and nephews, Suzy Gerber and Gene Gerber, best friend lifetime friend, Sandi Musik(Desind); love of her life, Jim Bettencourt, and many countless others.
